Expect the Unexpected

With child photography it’s important to know that “the subjects” aren’t always predictable. The presence of a camera changes their behavior, and the photographer has to make adjustments. In our experience, we feel it’s best to let go of expectations and let the child and the photographer collaborate through play and conversation.

At the same time, we want you to be involved in your kids photography session; selecting their clothes, backgrounds, props, environments, and even the finish to our trademark black and white photography.

It’s great when parents want to participate as well, but trust that an organic, natural event will unfold when your child steps into our spotlight. Through our lens and approach, a multitude of intangible and wonderful expressions from curiosity to hilarity will emerge from your child. Photography that makes you smile…you won’t be disappointed.

No surprise. Timing is Key

with Children’s Photography

As it is in just about anything, selecting the best time to photograph your child is a crucial decision when scheduling your children’s photography appointment.

So we recommend refraining from too many activities which might exhaust the skip from their step. Of course you should let them be kids, photography and the impact their

And of course, we’ll help accommodate your child’s routines and activities, but you’ll want them to be fresh and ready to have a great time.

“What to wear?” is a common question we hear at our photo studio. With children’s photography it’s important to choose clothes that reflect the essence of your child. For some, that might mean a favorite tu-tu or a pair of rubber boots. These pieces allow children to express themselves in a way that words cannot.

Texture in your child’s clothing is also a plus. Think: fabrics like tulle, corduroy, and velvet; adornments like embroidery, appliques, buttons or overstitching. Fun prints are a bonus like polka dots and playful stripes. Just be sure to bring some solids to balance out the look. Each will create visual interest in clothing without overpowering the portrait.

Avoid shirts with type, brands, and messages, unless you’re sure it will have value to you in years to come. Don't forget shoes to match each outfit or barefeet. If you can manage avoid white tennis shoes.

Don’t touch that!
We hear this phrase frequently from Mom and Dad when kids begin exploring our studio. We don’t mind; photography studios are supposed to have interesting objects, textures and curiosities to engage your child. Photography at it’s best should allow them to explore; we’ll capture this curiosity in your children’s photos.

Is your child shy?
We like to get to know children before they even step in front of the camera for their portrait photography appointment. If they’ve come in for the complimentary portrait planning appointment they generally have an increased comfort level with the space and staff. Speaking calmly and respectfully to your child allows us a chance to get to know your child.

Are those crocodile tears?
Once in a while, tears happen. :-( Maybe little brother wants a turn with a toy, or a favorite dress was left at home. We’ve got ideas to address your child’s needs: quickly introduce a new toy and play a game. Distraction can be a very effective tool for redirecting a child’s focus refocus and restart a playful mood. Since we are together for such a short time we've found that small rewards and postive encouragement to be the most effective tools in getting kids back on track.

Was your timing off and now you’ve got a hungry or tired little monkey?
We keep our pantry stocked with kid friendly snacks. Don’t be shy…requests have run the gamut from hard-boiled eggs to refried beans. If energy is low, we can raise the blood sugar and ratchet up the activities for their portrait session. From chasing bubbles to dancing, they won’t be sleeping on the couch during their kid’s photography “play date”. We promise!

My child doesn’t act this way at home!
Sometimes in all the excitement of a children’s photography session. Kids act in surprising and uncharacteristic ways. This is not unusual, and is no reflection of your parenting. When kids become the center of attention in the context of a photo studio, funny things happen. It’s okay; we’re prepared and have tricks to use this to our advantage.

Avoid the Cheese

children studio portrait of smiling boy

Somewhere along the path of childhood, we are taught to respond to a single word with a stock response. CHEESE! (recall mental picture of Cheshire grin) Pause for a moment with that image in mind, and you’ll probably agree that the result will look as goofy as it feels.

We know you want your child smiling back at you in their portrait, just as they would in real life.

We’ve found a natural, candid expression from a child is far more real and lasting through some straight-forward fun, silliness, and play. So say “No!” to cheese in your photos (you’ll be glad you did).
